Driven by his desire to save his terminally ill wife, Nora, Dr. Victor Fries turned to cryogenics and cold-based weaponry, using his scientific expertise to develop freezing technology. He became Mr. Freeze, using a freeze gun to freeze objects and people instantly. He is commonly depicted as an enemy of Batman, the Dark Knight of Gotham City. Mr. Freeze is known for his tragic backstory, in which a laboratory accident caused him to require a cryogenic suit to survive and led him to a life of crime. Despite his criminal actions, Mr. Freeze is sometimes portrayed as a sympathetic character, as his motivations stem from a desire to cure his wife's illness.
